Why standard Office 365 backup isn’t enough

One of the most common misconceptions we hear about cloud software services is that the responsibility for backing up and recovering your data falls to the service provider. In reality, most SaaS providers will provide a standard level of backup and recovery to ensure continuity if they have a hardware or data centre failure. But often, this service doesn't extend to the recovery of individual files.

Given that human error is still the leading cause of data loss in the UK, being able to recover files that a user accidentally deletes or saves over is equally as important. With standard Office 365 backup, if a file is removed from your "Deleted Items" folder, be it maliciously or in error, there's no way of getting it back. With Databarracks' Office 365 backup you can recover individual files on a granular basis.

We provide the same level of backup for Office 365 as we do for our traditional Backup as a Service customers – you get the same granularity and the same RPOs and RTOs. You can set your own retention and deletion policies, and decide how often you want to back up different file types: documents, spreadsheets, emails, etc. It gives you protection that you just don't get with Office 365 alone right now. It also gives you the added benefit of deciding how long to keep backups for – most companies will need to keep files for longer than the standard 14-30 days many SaaS providers offer.

We have been providing cloud-based backup and disaster recovery services for over 10 years, for both on premise systems and backup from cloud, to cloud. Last year, the National Computing Centre (NCC) asked us to author their Guidelines for Disaster Recovery in the Cloud to provide simple guidance on how businesses should approach disaster recovery when using cloud services. We hope the paper helps to dissect cloud disaster recovery in a truly practical way.
