Bomb-proof, spy-proof…earthquake proof? How we keep your data secure with The Bunker

Security is still one of the biggest factors that organisations consider when thinking about cloud services. We're often asked how we keep your data safe, and we understand how important it is to you. That's why we host our services from the UK's most secure data centres: The Bunker.

As the name suggests, The Bunker is an ex-military nuclear bunker designed to withstand attacks of massive proportions. Built during the Cold War, the station was designed to protect the nation a nuclear air attack. It is now a privately owned, incredibly secure data centre.

Physical location

One of The Bunker's data centres is located in Kent. You might remember last month Kent was hit by the UKs biggest earthquake in seven years, measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale. The Bunker remained completely unaffected throughout – with no interruption to services.

Situated outside of the M25, The Bunker is protected from the many risks that London faces. Floods, terrorism, theft and power outages are all very real treats for London-based data centres – these are all significantly reduced because of the data centre's remote location.

Physical security

The Bunker is completely surrounded by a 3.5m high, barbed wired fence and is patrolled 24 hours a day by onsite security staff and police-trained guard dogs. CCTV is in operation at all times and is actively monitored. Access is only granted through the strict request process, and on the receipt of valid photo identification on arrival.

Once inside the data centre, you are faced with 3m thick walls, bomb-proof steel doors, military EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) protection and Tempest RFI intrusion protection. No one is granted unescorted access – visitors are escorted by security staff at all times.

Redundancy

In case of a power outage, the data centre has redundant air conditioning units and redundant UPS conditioned power to ensure consistent temperatures and humidity. Power supplies are backed up by diesel generators.

Accreditations

The Bunker is ISO 27001 and PCI accredited. The ISO accreditation signifies an extremely high standard of information security practices, as verified by external auditors. Compliance to the standard demonstrates tight internal controls, and ensures they're meeting corporate governance and business continuity requirements.
